Lessons Learned From My Failed Sugar Diet
I’d like to start off by saying I tried, I really did. I have an inherent, unnatural craving for sugar. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had this insatiable lust for sugar. The word “diet” should be in parentheses because this was not that. I wouldn’t want to use the word “diet” anyway because of the negative connotations attached to it. It wasn’t a fast either; I don’t know what to call it. A trial run?
I will say I learned a lot. It’s hard for someone like me to go a week without sugar. Monday and Tuesday were a breeze. I recently started a new job, and while it’s fun, it was also my first time working a 40-hour workweek. So by the end of the workday, exhaustion hit hard. My natural instinct? Reach for the sugar (a pick-me-up). But I held strong… until Wednesday.
Wednesday was a good day; my lovely employer decided to surprise our team for our hard work with donuts. Fried, sugary perfection. I took a donut to be nice, in my own odd way. But I held onto that donut for hours. It sat in my hand for almost two hours until I decided to take a small bite. Personally, I’d call that a win. I didn’t have sugar again until Friday when people were giving out blow pops. I caved in immediately. Anyway to make a long story short, here are the sugar-free wisdom nuggets I picked up this week:
Lessons Learned:
1. Never give up.
Slips happen. Wednesday happened. But instead of calling it quits, I vowed to do better the next day. I set my mind to do better the next day. Even if I stumbled this week, I know I can improve next week, and the week after that. It’s a matter of mindset; don’t quit just because you fail. Fail better.
2. Eat Natural Sugar
Maybe if I’d had some fruit on hand – strawberries, peaches, grapes – I could have fought off those sugar cravings a little better. Next time, I’m stocking up on nature’s candy to satisfy my sweet tooth. Natural sugar is better than no sugar!
3. Drink more water
Here’s a theory: maybe I was just dehydrated? Like, really dehydrated? I’m no doctor, but I have a feeling staying hydrated could be a huge help.
So, the sugar experiment continues. If you have any tips or tricks, share them in the comments below. Maybe you have a name suggestion for this beyond “sugar diet” (because, honestly, that sounds a little scary). Join me on this journey, or cheer me on from the sidelines – together we can do this.
